Character Name: Clari Net
Series: Violinist of Hameln (manga continuity)
Gender: Male
Age: About 21.
Species: Human
Sexuality: Despite the insistence of certain characters, he is apparently straight. Could be bi, though. By the by, despite the obvious modeling of his church on the RCC, the priesthood is not celibate--or so one can infer from his conversation about what he looks for in girlfriends.
Appearance:
Clari is a pretty stereotypical bishounen: Tall, thin, with long blonde hair. He's six feet tall, and despite his slight frame he appears to have moderate definition in his build (enough to go toe-to-toe with dragons, in any case). His hair is straight, very shiny and hangs to about his ankles, usually gathered at the ends by a tie...around calf level. He has some small pieces of hair that are shorter and frame his face, and he also wears a headband with his name on it like the cheesy 80s anime character that he is. He also has, for headgear, large golden earrings in the shape of an elongated hexagon with a cross nestled inside them. (They're actually explosives), and a pair of thick, round glasses over his big grey eyes. As for clothes, he generally wears priestly vestments in blue and white and many layers: White shoes, white pants, and over these a thick and elaborate set of blue-and-white robes, with gold trim on the sleeves and gold on the shoulders of the "breastplate," which is emblazoned with a large white crucifix. Clari tends to carry a golden staff with which he performs magical spells, the end of it is basically a larger version of his earrings. He carries himself with a haughty air and usually a very serious expression.
Personality:
Clari is a very serious and devoted man, as befits his twin offices of Arch-Bishop and High Commander. He's very intelligent, capable both of scholarship and of thinking and strategizing on his feet while being mauled by dragons. Unfortunately, he also tends to be an intimidating, pompous, arrogant ass with a touch of vanity--his "sense of duty may come off as rudeness," as one character put it. However, he's basically a good person and though he has a frosty exterior, a little time melts it easily enough. Clari's a perfectionist, too, prone to feeling intense frustration with himself if he's not capable of saving everyone. He is very loyal and intensely protective--indeed, Clari seems to be completely unfamiliar with the meaning of the word fear, setting himself against entire armies of monsters and completely willing to sacrifice his own life to protect his country and his friends.
On a lighter note, Clari is also a character in a gag manga where no one is safe from silliness. No one. He's very stubborn, and can be absentminded, hot-headed and impulsive. He's got a short fuse when it comes to remarks about how he's "obviously, a homo!" Clari also has no sense of direction, and his own vanity sometimes makes Hijinks Ensue. Most important, though, is the matter of his baby sister, Cor Net: He loves her intensely and, since they are orphans, raised her from infancy, spoiling her rotten. Unfortunately, said spoiling has warped Cor's personality into a twisted, homicidal, obsessive psychopath...of which Clari is blissfully unaware, even when the evidence is right in front of his face.
Abilities: (For superhuman powers/strength/abilities, describe how they will be limited)
In his canon, Clari may be the most powerful human mage on the planet, and though he's not the strongest man, he's definitely somewhere in the Top Ten. He has access to powerful holy magic such as Heaven's Wheel, which can wipe out armies, and binding gaeasses which are (almost) strong enough to pull a King Of Hell down to the Pit. He can teleport across continents in a flash, and summon angelic spirits to fight for him. This is all leaving out minor magical things--like, say, fireballs. He's smart, often out-thinking his opponents, and is physically extremely tough as well...he went mano-a-mano with a King Of Hell, then managed to be up and walking around after being gnawed on for a while by a dragon...that had five heads. As safeguards, he's turned his earrings into explosives, and, as mentioned above, seems to have no fear of death and will thus use all his abilities to their fullest, uncaring of the strain it puts on his body and mind.
In Manhattan, he's lost all of his strong magic--teleportation is flat out, summoning is flat out, the bursts of holy magic now are absolutely exhausting and their damage is minimal--even mere fireballs are very tiring and won't do much to much of anything. The binding spells won't drag anything anywhere; at best they'll pin something of demonic alignment in place for a few minutes--and of course, these exhaust him as well. Even his strength and stamina have been cut back--he'd survive getting roughed up by crabs, but not at all getting chewed on by Big Mommy.
Weaknesses:
Being a user of holy magic, his natural opposite is in the dark and demonic. He's unlike most mages, who make up for great powers with frail physical selves; he's not physically weak at all. His major weakness here, in Manhattan, is actually one of his former greater strengths: cast-iron radioactive cojones. Until he gets a grip on himself, his capabilities, and the nature of his situation, his lack of fear and readiness to exhaust and sacrifice himself will only hurt him with no worthwhile effect being made on Manhattan and Cloverfield. His aforementioned short fuse comes with an explosive finish, and he's prone to get into or escalate fights once his buttons have been pushed. He tends also to overestimate himself--sure, he WAS very strong but his opponents were often tougher...and if it was bad in his home canon, it's much worse here. Likewise, his vanity and other character flaws sometimes lead him into making stupid choices, and his blind devotion to his psychotic sister will be a major failing if she ever shows up.
Manhattanite or outsider? OUTSIDERRRRRR.
History:
Clari was born the eldest son to middling-class Sforzando parents. Sforzando was--still is--the foremost country of humans in the Hameln 'verse, where the world is being overrun by terrifyingly powerful and cruel demons, called Mazoku. Warfare is a constant state of affairs here, but Sforzando is the least-devastated of all the human nations, due to its strong military allies and its being the home of holy power and the holy bloodline. There were two notable battles in Clari's youth: In the first, his father, a soldier in the Sforzando Magicorps, almost died but was saved in the nick of time by Queen Horn, the ruler of Sforzando and possessor of the holy bloodline, which grants elongated life and healing powers. Clari was struck by the grace and mercy shown by Horn, even moreso when his newly-healed father explained to him that using her healing powers will sap and shorten her lifespan. His father explained that that was why he served in the Magicorps--to protect Queen and country so that she doesn't need to use her wonderful power, a life philosophy which Clari later adopted as his own. In the later mazoku attack perhaps two years later, Clari's family wasn't so lucky. Both of his parents were killed in horrific ways by Dragon Hell-King Drum, for whom Clari has since harbored intense hatred, leaving him and his infant sister orphans. They were taken in and cared for by the Royal Family--Queen Horn, and her eldest son Lute, the greatest sorceror in the world. It's unclear whether or not it began before his parents died, but Lute had begun teaching Clari the art of magic, since the boy demonstrated an aptitude for it. In either case, Clari's life at the palace was not lonely, as he had Lute, his sister, and a whole gaggle of other orphans to cavort with.
Unfortunately, the serene peace was not to last, as in yet another great war, the palace itself was breached by the worst of all the mazoku generals, the Unholy Hell King Bass. Bass and Lute faced off, and after a long and arduous battle, Lute managed to decapitate Bass. However, it's not that easy to kill mazoku--Bass survived and used his magic to possess Lute, turning him into a soulless puppet carrying around Bass's severed head. The loss of his teacher further galvanized him to continue his study of magic, now under Queen Horn, and work to protect her and her country, and destroy the mazoku and save humanity.
Skip forward roughly thirteen-fifteen years, when the main plotline of the manga takes place, and Clari has grown into an adult.
After this battle, the party continued their journey north, while Clari remained in Sforzando to care for Queen Horn, herself growing ever closer to death. His younger sister, Cor Net, he sent along with Flute and Hamel in the mistaken belief that she would teach Flute how to use the magic that runs in her veins. Unfortunately, Clari did not then (and still doesn't) realize that his raising of sister in the palace, doting on her every need, has transformed her into a spoilt brat who views Flute as a love rival in her psychotic (and unrequited) crush on Hamel. It's a miracle Flute survived. Clari appeared a few times on errands from Horn, rejoining the party in the ruined capital of Slur in a mission to save an intensely magical artifact, the Pandora's Box, from an army of mazoku. However, the battle soon turned into one to save the Hawk Hell-King Sizer, who had already recovered the Pandora's Box, turned her back on the mazoku, and destroyed her own division of the demonic hordes. They were in the end victorious, and Clari returned to Sforzando to resume watching over Queen Horn--taking with him Cor, much to Flute's relief. Clari and Horn continue to watch over the Five Great Hopes from afar, and he to watch over her, as Horn's health continues to decline. On one of these evenings, he had just finished the vespers service and, exiting the cathedral, fell to the ground in a dead faint.
When he woke up, he was in a very different church in a very different place...
